Anti-Trump Graffiti Spree May Have Ended Chances Of Financial Aid For Undocumented Students
An anti-Trump graffiti spree at the University of Connecticut has doomed legislation to allow undocumented students at the state's public colleges and universities access to financial aid.
Leaders of Connecticut Students for a Dream, the chief advocacy group for the bill, said support eroded over the weekend after news broke of the arrest of Eric Cruz-Lopez, an undocumented immigrant from Mexico and organizer with the group who was charged with more than 100 counts of criminal mischief.
Police said the 22-year-old Cruz-Lopez, who no longer attends the university, admitted he painted slurs about President Donald Trump and the word "pest" in and around the Homer Babbidge Library and other buildings, according to the warrant for his arrest.
Lawmakers said the bill was scheduled for a vote in the House on Tuesday, but as news spread of Cruz-Lopez's arrest, some members withdrew their support and the bill wasn't called for a vote.
