White Nationalists Interrupt Book Talk At Politics And Prose
Rachel Sadon
A group of white nationalists interrupted a book talk at Politics and Prose on Saturday with a megaphone and chants of this land is our land. ... Author Jonathan Metzl was discussing his book Dying of Whiteness: How the Politics of Racial Resentment Is Killing Americas Heartland at the flagship location in Chevy Chase when a group of about 10 people stormed in.
This was in a very friendly environment at Politics and Prose. It was ironically at the moment in the talk where I was making the claim that America is better when were at the most generous, the strongest, the most inclusive Metzl said on MSNBCs AM Joy. I see this very well-organized chain of white men and women. They were very well orchestrated.
No one was injured and the incident lasted just a couple of minutes.
Several videos captured the scene:
{snip}
Its not the first time that Politics and Prose has found itself the target of white nationalists. The venerable bookstore was on the receiving end of a number of threats over the Pizzagate hoax that drew a gunman to Comet Ping Pong, which is located just down the block (Obviously Comet Ping Pong was at the center of all of this but really most of the businesses in this block have been affected one way or the other, Politics and Proses marketing director told DCist at the time).
....
The scary part, Metzl said on MSNBC, was initially when we thought: are they armed?
This story has been updated with additional details about the group involved.

(45,430 posts)The author brings up some very good points with data to back it up. Sounds like the title of the book is what triggered the white supremacist douchebags rather than the content.

I do consider the Avalon to be 'my' movie house, so visit the neighborhood when I visit friends in nearby suburb.

Very bizarre and disturbing material, and the bookstore, an institution in DC is in the CC neighborhood near where I lived and also close friends from Pgh and San Diego. Thanks for putting this together, MJ, esp. the ugly Pizzagate piece.
White supremacist assaults in the US and DC, who would have imagined.
> It's "digital Civil War now," as guest Peter Daou, the Democratic strategist just said on TH's program. This impt. interview needs to post here.

-> Peter Daou is giving a talk on his new book, "Confronting the Far-Right Menace," at Politics & Prose, May 6.
Peter Daou - "Digital Civil War: Confronting the Far-Right Menace," Monday, May 6, 2019 - 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Raised in Beirut, Daou has served as a digital media strategist for and advisor to political figures including Hillary Clinton and John Kerry, a role that has positioned him to observe first-hand how the rise of far-right extremism has fueled a digital war across a wide swath of social media. Fighting with words and images designed to intimidate, enrage, and inflict psychological injury, these combatantswhich include not just trolls and hackers, but activists, pundits, politicians, and many othersare attacking the very bedrock of democracy. To stop the right-wing digital assault, Daou argues, its necessary to understand how their value systems and strategies play out online.
