Precourt's appointment is held up while an investigation takes place

State Attorney: Hold off on hiring Precourt at expressway

State Attorney Jeff Ashton told Orlando's Expressway Authority on Friday to hold off hiring former state Rep. Steve Precourt as its next director because of an investigation his office is conducting of the toll-road agency.

Precourt, R-Orlando, has quit his legislative post and was expected to take the job paying $185,000 a year after the board of the Orlando Orange County Expressway Authority approved his contract next week.

In a letter delivered to authority offices late this morning, Ashton wrote that he has "a reasonable suspicion that Florida Statutes may have been violated and that further investigation, which may involved a Grand Jury, is warranted."

He also said some witnesses his office interviewed exhibited a "lack of candor and questionable lapses in memory."
