Atlantic Beach fires city manager

The Atlantic Beach City Commission voted 3-2 to immediately terminate City Manager Nelson Van Liere Monday evening.

Commissioners M. Blythe Waters and Jimmy Hill voted to keep Van Liere.

Commissioner John Stinson filed the resolution to terminate Van Liere in early January. Stinson stated in documents with the resolution that miscommunications with a residential building variance in December spurred his resolution. He stated that Van Liere withheld information from him concerning the variance, while Van Liere said that the issue is a misunderstanding.

Stinson reiterated during Monday’s commission meeting that the situation is the latest in the manager not properly communicating with him while trying to work with residents on issues. Hill, Waters and Commissioner Mitchell Harding saw the variance issue as Stinson frustrated over not getting the outcome he wanted. Waters specifically stated that the timeline Stinson provided does not prove Van Liere did not do his job.
