Gov. Scott signs state worker pay raise - comes with benefits change

Gov. Rick Scott Wednesday signed a bill giving a pay raise to more than 19,000 Leon County residents. The across-the-board increases for state workers guarantee a minimum of $1,400 for those making less than $40,000 and $1,000 for those making more, with certain law enforcement officers receiving additional hikes.

SB 7022 will cost the state more than $186 million with most of the raises going into effect Oct 1. The price tag for workers includes tweaks to their pension and health benefits. New hires will default into a 401(k)-like investment plan instead of a traditional pension if they do not make a choice within nine months.

The measure also calls for the development of a four-tier health insurance plan beginning in 2020. Workers will have a choice of four levels of coverage at different price points – splitting any savings with the state.

The House insisted on the changes in exchange for an across-the-board pay hike proposed by the Senate.
