Time capsule found inside Lake Eola Park's Confederate statue
“Johnny Reb” had a secret.
As Orlando workers dismantled the Confederate memorial Tuesday at Lake Eola Park to move it to Greenwood Cemetery, they discovered hidden in the statue’s base a rusted box believed to be a time capsule, likely placed there at least a century ago.
Don Price, Greenwood sexton, said the box weighed about 3 pounds.
City officials say they do not plan to open it immediately because of concerns that the wrong conditions might damage its contents.
Price said documents or photos are likely what’s inside.
