'Surprising, startling and shocking' Harold Knowles' indictment stuns
As the founder of one of the oldest black law firms in North Florida, Harold Knowles has extensive reach within local government in the Big Bend. Knowles served as a trusted attorney, as general counsel to government and community agencies. A racial pioneer since his high school days, Knowles belongs to Tallahassee's legal and community elite.
But his 40-year career and position of influence have been jeopardized by his recent indictment on federal bribery, conspiracy, and money-laundering charges in the Middle District of Georgia.
Knowles, 69, was arrested by the U.S. Marshals Office on Aug. 11 and taken before a magistrate at the federal courthouse in downtown Tallahassee.
Attorney Jack McLean was with Knowles during that brief appearance after which Knowles was released without having to post bail. The charges, which among other things describe Knowles as a middleman in a $100,000 bribe scheme, are without merit, McLean said.
