Be prepared for storm strike

http://www.orlandosentinel.com/weather/hurricane/hurricane-guide/os-hg-hurricane-what-you-need-to-know-20160524-story.html

A rundown of the things you need to know to be prepared for a storm strike including what to do with pets, electronics, insurance and water.

Pets

If you have to leave your home, take your animal with you.

Many hurricane shelters have animal-only areas. Or, if you can swing it financially, go to a pet-friendly hotel.

Make sure you have all your pet stuff in one place. The Humane Society suggests having carriers, leashes, harnesses, litter boxes and enough food, water and necessary medications to last at least five days.

Check that your pet has a collar tag with your current contact information, and keep in a safe place a recent picture of the animal with your family. The Humane Society also recommends having a microchip placed in your pet.

MONROE COUNTY, FL — With the storm track of Category 5 Hurricane Irma still headed for the Florida Keys, Monroe County will be issuing a mandatory visitor evacuation expected to begin at sunrise on Wednesday. An evacuation for residents also will be issued. The time has yet to be determined.

However, tourists and residents are encouraged to start evacuation plans now and the earlier people leave the Keys the less traffic they are likely to encounter.

“If ever there was a storm to take seriously in the Keys, this is it,” Monroe County Emergency Management Director Martin Senterfitt said. “The sooner people leave, the better.”

Now is a good time for tourists and residents to fill their tanks with fuel and complete their evacuation plans. There will be no shelters in Monroe County. Information about out-of-town shelters is in the works.

As South Florida grapples with the possibility of widespread flooding from Hurricane Irma, the mayor of Miami-Dade’s largest barrier island city on Tuesday asked residents to consider leaving the island immediately — before the county officially issues an anticipated evacuation order.

“I’m personally recommending to our residents that you consider leaving the city of Miami Beach in advance of the evacuation order that we anticipate will be coming from the county mayor,” said Beach Mayor Philip Levine in a press conference.

Hours after Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez said residents on the barrier islands and along coastal mainland communities should start preparing to leave, Levine asked Beach residents who have a place to go to begin evacuating now. He also told residents who don’t have a plan to make one quickly.

Levine said leaving now will help evacuees avoid the anticipated crush of vehicles that could clog the four causeways that connect to the mainland.

Miami-Dade's mayor expects to order Miami Beach and much of the coastal areas of Miami and southern Dade to evacuate as early as Wednesday evening ahead of Hurricane Irma.

"That order is probably coming late Wednesday or early Thursday," Mayor Carlos Gimenez told reporters Tuesday.

He said county evacuation zones A and B would be the target of the order, but that future orders may broaden the evacuation target. Evacuation orders trigger a voluntary evacuation ahead of expected coastal flooding, with officials warning emergency services will not be available during a storm in the areas.

Gimenez said the first wave of evacuations of about 2,000 vulnerable residents will start Wednesday morning.
