Democrats trying to make a statement in Sarasota Tuesday

Sarasota small business owner Rita Rimmer didn’t always follow politics as closely as she does today.

“I may not have come to this kind of election in the past,” Rimmer said last week after casting her vote in the special election for a Sarasota state House race.

Rimmer voted in the 2016 presidential contest, changing her registration from independent to Democrat so she could support U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders in the Democratic primary. She voted for Hillary Clinton in the general election.

But she sometimes skipped lower-profile elections in the past. She wasn’t going to miss voting in Sarasota’s District 72 state House race, though. Not after watching President Donald Trump get elected.
