Can Andrew Gillum unite Democrats? Experts say Trump tweet and DeSantis comments help

Florida voters went to the polls Tuesday and decided come November they wanted two elections in one. They would pick a new governor and have a referendum on President Donald J. Trump.

Both Republican and Democratic voters rejected legacy candidates to go with new blood. Two little-known 39-year-olds. The mayor from a remote capital city and a congressman from a sleepy Atlantic beach town.

Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum rode a surge generated by national media coverage of his candidacy and rallies with Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders by his side to defeat Gwen Graham, the daughter of a former governor and senator.

Congressman Ron DeSantis used frequent Fox News appearances and a Trump endorsement to overcome a political network of support that Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam cultivated during 22 years in state and federal offices.
