Fired for flying Confederate flag, Georgia officer sues

The Georgia police officer who was terminated earlier this year for flying a Confederate flag at her Georgia home is suing her former place of employment.

AllOnGeorgia reported on the story 20-year veteran of the Roswell Police Department back in June. Silvia Cotriss, a woman who had achieved the rank of sergeant, was fired because of “conduct unbecoming of an officer” appealed her termination back in June.

“She was displaying her pride in her Southern heritage and honoring her recently deceased husband,” the lawsuit said. “The Confederate flag {is a} generally accepted symbol of Georgia heritage.”

Cotriss’ home is not in the City of Roswell, but in neighboring Woodstock where the flag was displayed on her front porch.

I know of two cases like this, where cops were fired for making political statements. Now they're back at work, and nobody can touch them. Flying the rebel toilet paper is protected by the First Amendment. I would be happy to eliminate it from public property, which is a reasonable goal. We can pressure businesses to remove it, but that's voluntary.

I agree that it is her right to fly it, just like it is my right to burn the American flag if I choose to do so.

Until she does something on her job that demonstrates that she cannot perform her job she is untouchable, but I also reserve my right to loathe her (at least in private).

She's not a good fit because she is biased at best, racist and proud of it more likely.
