Illinois ecosystems threatened by increasing isolation
EDELSTEIN — For the most part, the ecosystems of Illinois live in isolation from each other. It wasn’t always that way.
It probably never will be that way again, at least according to some naturalists. But they also say it isn’t futile to believe at least some connections can be made to ensure those biological communities remain viable.
Those connections can be among people as well as nature. After all, people are part of the ecosystem, too.
“We understand a lot about the natural systems and fragmentation and the costs to the natural world and the people as well,” said Doug Blodgett, the director of river conservation for the Illinois chapter of The Nature Conservancy.
