GRABILL, Ind. (WANE) An 8-year-old girl hospitalized after being accidentally shot by her brother with a BB gun has died.

Deborah Kay Schwartz of Grabill died at a local hospital after being taken away from her home at 8320 Ricker Road last Thursday. Police at the time said the girl had been accidentally shot in the eye with a BB gun by her 6-year-old brother.

The Allen County Coroner’s Office on Monday said young Deborah died of a gunshot wound to the head. Her death was ruled the county’s first homicide of 2018.

The shooting remains under investigation by the Allen County Sheriff’s Department, the Allen County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office and the Allen County Coroner’s Office.

1. I remember my brother and I had a BB gun when we were kids... and we were always warned...

...not to shoot someone in the eye. We were never supposed to point the gun at anybody.

Eventually we were denied BB's, and my brother started sticking the barrel in the dirt to fire little dirt clods. Eventually the BB gun was taken away as well.

I am surprised a BB could kill someone, but then the eye is a soft entry point to the brain. I do wonder if the BB gun was really a .177 pellet gun, which are more dangerous: higher weight and velocity.

BB guns must be much more powerful than they used to be. I say this because I was shot in the eye with a BB gun when I was a kid and my eye wasn't injured. I was very lucky, though.
