Indy star: More than 3,300 additional COVID-19 cases reported in schools, total tops 15,000

More than 3,300 additional COVID-19 cases reported in schools, total tops 15,000

More than 3,300 additional cases of COVID-19 in Indiana schools were reported Monday by the Indiana State Department of health. The majority of the cases occurred last week, but some date back as far as September, according to the new data.

Of the additional cases reported Monday, 2,240 occurred in students, 495 occurred in teachers and 575 occurred in school staff members. This week's numbers show a very small decline in the number of student cases reported and an uptick in the number of teacher and staff cases. It's the second week in a row that the state's schools have reported more than 3,300 additional cases.
Masks come off at lunch at Garden City Elementary School, Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2020. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, extra precautions are in place.

The rise in cases reported among students and school employees is following a dramatic increase in the cases reported across the state that's becoming harder for schools to manage. Schools across the state have begun returning to fully virtual learning or scaling back in-person instruction. This could lead to declines in the number of school cases reported, though it's unclear if those moves will actually help stop the spread within communities or if cases will just no longer be reflected in the school dashboard.
