Healing Austin: Faith lifts small town from depths of HIV plague (Part 3)

SCOTT COUNTY, Ind. – She arrived 6½ months pregnant and bleeding.

She barely made it to the hospital at all, and by the time she got there both she and the baby were in grave danger. She was an HIV-positive, recovering intravenous drug addict who had suffered a cascade of pregnancy complications.

Dr. Will Cooke tried to stay hopeful as he performed an emergency C-section, delivered her 3-pound-5-ounce baby girl and gave the newborn medicine to prevent HIV. It worked. The tiny infant spent months in neonatal intensive care but tested negative for the virus. And the mom swore she’d never shoot up again.

This time, hope won.

But hope and heartache are caught in a delicate dance here.
