Union says some Kansas prison workers forced to work 16-hour shifts

TOPEKA -- A Kansas workers union said Friday that some employees at one of the state’s largest prisons are being forced to work 16-hour shifts as the facility deals with a staffing shortage and other issues.

The Kansas Organization of State Employees said in an email that a 16-hour shift violates an agreement that “no employee shall be mandated to work more than 12 hours in a 24 hour period.”

The union said a complaint has been filed with the Kansas Department of Corrections.

A spokesman for the Kansas Department of Corrections said in an email that the agency “has no comment at this time on what is a personnel matter.”

I don't believe that they were using the words "employee" and "prisoner" interchangeably. TexasTowelie Jul 2017 #4

and sometimes there would be several in a row. However, the worst was when I was at work for 32 hours straight on a project. After about 18 hours the brain turns into quicksand. I don't believe I could put up with another 70 hour week again.

Why should anyone profit from the labor of a prisoner? My grandfather's grandfather set trators on fire for profiting from the labor of captives.

The people that the article refers to are the guards and possibly some administrators who are state employees that are not only paid, but also have the state benefits package and belong to a union. I don't believe that the prisoners are part of a union.

is a tough state to enforce laws
concerning forced labor. Even
with a union, if the situation is
valid...the warden would be
the only one left guarding the
prison...everyone else walks
the picket line. throw brownbacks
ass in there...let the traitor do a
few shifts.
