Beshear calls comments made by elected leaders at protest 'reckless'

Gov. Andy Beshear criticized comments made by Kentucky lawmakers and speakers at a rally calling for the lifting of coronavirus restrictions, saying the statements were "reckless" and irresponsible.

"It’s OK to disagree, but if you’re a leader that people listen to, be responsible in how you do it," he said in a Sunday night briefing after taking Saturday off.

Asked about the protest, which drew about 1,000 people to Frankfort, the governor specifically noted state Rep. Savannah Maddox's assertion that no one can force her to get a vaccine when it is developed.

"What I heard is that speakers and leaders, and even state representatives or state senators, asked people to take off their masks (and) told people that social distancing is optional and one even said they're not going to take the vaccine when it's created.
