Teacher union to boycott businesses that opposed Bossier tax proposal

A teacher union will boycott businesses that funded committees set up to kill a tax proposal for Bossier Parish teacher raises.

Red River United teacher's union advocates for teachers and school employees in Bossier, Caddo, and Red River Parishes. President of Red River United, Jackie Lansdale, said the union won't buy from Bossier businesses that funded any of the three political action committees against the Bossier Parish Schools tax proposal.

The Bossier Parish Schools proposal that would have hiked property taxes for teacher pay was overwhelmingly rejected in Saturday's election. The proposal would have brought in nearly $23 million per year for teacher and other school employee pay. Voters rejected the proposal by nearly 12,000 votes. Another proposal that would have allotted $3 million per year for 10 years to fund the Bossier Parish Schools technology department also failed by around the same amount of votes.

Lansdale said Red River United will boycott businesses every Saturday until there are steps are taken to raise school salaries and provide necessary services to students. According to campaign finance reports, some of the businesses the union is boycotting donated thousands of dollars to the committees against the tax proposal.
