Delayed But Not Defeated: Voting rights for non-citizens proposal put on hold, right-wing officials frothPortland City Councilor Pious Ali was not able to secure the votes needed to extend municipal voting rights to non-citizens, a proposal he spearheaded back in February with the help of Mayor Ethan Strimling.
“We will do more research and come up with a concrete plan of implementation,” said Ali at a City Council meeting late Monday night after several hours of intense public comment.
Instead of passage, the City Council voted unanimously to send the proposal to the Legislative Committee for additional work. The Legislative Committee, comprised of Ali with Councilors Jill Duson and Kimberly Cook, expect to address concerns over potential conflict with state law and unintended consequences the proposal might have for undocumented people living in Portland.
"My concerns are about doing this right," said Councilor Duson. "There needs to be in depth work done with immigration advocates. I don’t want people to go to jail because they voted."
