Treasurer Poliquin continues to squander state resources on MSHA witch hunt
Real needs of Maine families go unmet while Administration officials proceed with political smear campaign

Portland, ME - More than a week after an independent government watchdog cleared ousted Maine State Housing Authority (MSHA) director Dale McCormick of fabricated malfeasance charges, Maine Treasurer Bruce Poliquin continues to misuse taxpayer funds in an attempt to spin the affair to his political advantage.

On Monday morning, Poliquin sent an email blast from the maine.gov computer system in which he claimed that Maine's Office of Program Evaluation & Government Accountability (OPEGA) uncovered a "demonstrated pattern of wasteful spending at MSHA." The Treasurer's take on the OPEGA report stands in stark contrast to that of the vast majority of independent observers - including the editorial boards of the Portland Press Herald and Bangor Daily News- who saw no evidence of wrongdoing on McCormick's part.

The Maine Heritage Policy Center's (MHPC) Maine Wire blog also continues to smear McCormick and echo Poliquin's alternate reading of the OPEGA report. Last month, Maine's Majority uncovered extensive evidence of improper collusion between MHPC and Poliquin. At one point Poliquin advised MSHA board chair Peter Anastos to take an opinion piece and "run it by Lance," a reference to MHPC CEO Lance Dutson. In another exchange, Poliquin instructs Dutson to provide him with bullet points which "demonstrate competence" on McCormick's part.

"For months, Poliquin ignored the challenges facing Maine's hardworking families so he and the Maine Heritage Policy Center could execute a political hit job at MSHA," said Maine's Majority Director Chris Korzen. "It is astounding and despicable that he continues to misappropriate state resources for this campaign. When is Bruce Poliquin going to start doing his job, and stop using his office for personal political gain?"

Poliquin's taxpayer-funded email blast can be viewed at: http://www.scribd.com/doc/95879237/Poliquin-email-blast-June-4-2012.
