Delaney files bill to fix Metro.

Another month at Metro: safety failures, including a fire on the Red Line, unreliable service, long delays and daily problems with escalators, elevators and train cars. The scale of the failure has been almost unimaginable. Meanwhile, we still don’t have the expanded service and additional routes that we need.

That’s why this week I introduced legislation to reform Metro and make sure that the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) starts being run more effectively. My bill, the WMATA Governance Reform Act, ensures that real experts with real experience are appointed to WMATA’s Board of Directors.

I hear from Marylanders nearly every day about the growing problems at Metro, many of which were just chronicled in extensive detail in the Washington Post, Marylanders are worried and frustrated. A morning commute from Shady Grove shouldn’t feel like a safety gamble and working families shouldn’t have their daily lives disrupted because more single-tracking made it impossible for the family to be together in the evening.

Right now, the WMATA Board features representatives from the federal government, as well as the three local jurisdictions that are served by the Metro. My bill would require that a majority of federal appointees to the Board must be either: (1) a certified transit expert, (2) a certified management expert, (3) a certified finance expert or (4) a certified safety expert.

Our region depends upon Metro. Time and again I’ve fought for more funding for Metro and authored bipartisan infrastructure legislation that would help expand and rebuild the system. But to fully solve the problem, we also need qualified management and that’s what the WMATA Governance Reform Act is designed to do.

Survey: What do you think? Should we reform WMATA?

Sincerely,

John
