Prominent African-American Clergy to Endorse Marriage Equality on Maryland Ballot

WHO: Rev. Delman Coates of the 8,000-member Mt. Ennon Baptist Church in Clinton, Md. will lead a news conference featuring a number of well-known ministers from around the country, including Rev. Al Sharpton, to urge Marylanders to vote for Question 6 on the November ballot.

WHAT: Question 6, the Civil Marriage Protection Act, grants civil marriage licenses to committed gay and lesbian couples while exempting religious institutions. No Maryland clergy will have to marry anyone they don’t want to. This will be the first time African-American clergy of national prominence gather to support marriage equality.

WHERE: National Press Club, 529 14th St. NW, 13th Floor, Washington, DC 20045

Please RSVP to Kevin Nix at kevin@mdfme.org. Space is limited.

Marylanders for Marriage Equality is a coalition of diverse groups – including 1199 SEIU of Maryland, ACLU of Maryland, NAACP of Baltimore, Equality Maryland, and the Human Rights Campaign – working to protect marriage on the November ballot in Maryland.

I sent the link to a friend who is working to vote a nasty constitutional amendment here in Minnesota. She is specifically working in the African-American community so this article may be useful for her.
