Maryland comptroller misdirected more than 21 million in tax money

Maryland's chief tax collector said Wednesday that his office accidentally misdirected $21.4 million of local income tax payments for years, a mistake that affects nearly every municipality in the state.

Comptroller Peter Franchot told a panel of state lawmakers that the scope of misdirected tax payments was broader than he previously thought.

State auditors reported in September that the comptroller's office had sent $8.7 million to the wrong municipalities in Montgomery County. On Wednesday, Franchot said his office found another $12.7 million in misdirected money since 2010.

Over the next couple of days, 89 cities will receive checks for money they should have received over the past five years. Some checks will be for hundreds of thousands of dollars.

1. Glad they took responsibility and are correcting it.

'The comptroller's office is working on a two-part patch to fix the problem with its tax-processing software, which was written in the 1980s and installed in the early 1990s.'

2. Kind of funny, but the software is probably nearly unhackable since it was

written 10 years before there really was any sort of internet. The flip side, is that no one probably understands the code it was written in.

4. Hey. What's going on in Maryland? It is a hell-hole

out here in SW Ohio. Teabagger central. Strickland did horrible against Portman. There was little visibility the last two months, with portman and the koch brothers dominating the airwaves. He got no national help.

6. We definitely need a change in the DNC leadership. We need a change like we had in 2004, when

Howard Dean came in and implemented the 50 state strategy. Don't know who is up for that. Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren. They seem to me to be the ones that can actually bring the base of the party out. We'll see.

Sitting out on the back porch in short sleeves and shorts watching the dog and whats left of the daylight (and on DU!!). It's 75 now and it's possible we could see a few snowflakes before dawn tomorrow. Crazy weather.

Keith Ellison's up to lead DNC, among some others.
