Howard County 5-year-old is first child in Maryland confirmed with coronavirus; Hogan announces further emergency orders

Maryland has its first case of a child testing positive for the new coronavirus — a 5-year-old girl in Howard County, Gov. Larry Hogan said Thursday at a news conference in Annapolis.

Maryland overall has 107 confirmed cases, up from 85 on Wednesday, the same day the state had its first coronavirus death. The Prince George’s County man who died was in his 60s and had underlying health problems, state officials said. He acquired the COVID-19 illness through community transmission and had no known travel history.

The child is Maryland’s lone case for anyone under 18. There are 76 cases of coronavirus in Marylanders aged 18 to 64 and 30 among those 65 and older. Montgomery and Prince George’s counties remain those most impacted, with 33 and 23 confirmed cases, respectively. There are eight confirmed cases in Baltimore City and 12 in Baltimore County.

Hogan expressed dismay that — despite warnings — some Marylanders were treating this period as a “vacation” or “spring break.” Hogan added that “we’re trying to avoid locking down society” but that “we had people totally ignoring” a past order limiting gatherings to under 50 Marylanders. Also among Thursday’s emergency orders, Hogan reduced the cap on mass gatherings to 10, following federal guidelines.

I haven't read many articles about the young being affected so I thought it was worth posting.
