Maryland orders all enclosed shopping malls closed to stop spread of coronavirus

Gov. Larry Hogan Thursday morning ordered all enclosed shopping malls in Maryland closed to stop the spread of coronavirus, while also further limiting mass gatherings to 10 people.

The move, seemingly inevitable as at least three malls in the state and multiple anchor and specialty stores across the country had already shuttered on their own, further reduces the number of places for Marylanders to escape their self-quarantines.

The latest in a series of ordered closings is designed to slowdown the spread of the coronavirus, with the state is reporting at least 85 confirmed cases as of Thursday morning, resulting in one death so far.

A Johns Hopkins epidemiologist said that lessening the opportunities for people to interact with others who may carry the virus will help decrease its transmission. But, said Jennifer Nuzzo, senior scholar at the Center for Health Security at the Bloomberg School of Public Health, every closing comes at a cost — from unemployment to “social cohesion” to sustainability should measures to maintain social distance continue for months rather than weeks.

applies to restaurants on the edges of the malls that have separate entrances that do not require access from the main mall doors. They could at least still do takeout and delivery business.
