To me, the biggest surprise was that HoCo voted Hogan

Clarksville and the western part of the county has always been conservative, but Columbia has been blue for time in memorial.

Any thoughts?

1. Sorry to say I haven't studied it,

or had time to discuss with friends (and relatives, some of whom I've learned are repug, so we won't discuss politics, but they're in southern Maryland.)

2. Breakdown from Politico

As I said in another thread (perhaps to you, in which case I apologize), I attended High School in Columbia, and we're all now late 40s to early 50s. Mostly, but certainly not all white. Mix of kids from Columbia, Clarksville area, & Laurel at that time. I'd say 90% of my classmates who are still in the area supported Hogan. Taxes, gun rights, and (I suspect) racism were the chief factors. Of course I could be wrong about race, given the level of Ben Carson support some of them have expressed

3. It wasn't me on the other thread, Algernon Moncrieff,

but I'm interested to hear this. Not thrilled, of course, and utterly mystified about the ben carson stuff.

I am concerned about one very practical matter: Attended my daughter's wedding today, married in Pr. Frederick + partied in Solomons, and one of the guests (small crowd of about 20) who is my daughter's financial adviser, not sure her age but probably similar to yours, after I asked 'how's business' when we first met, said 'busy.' I suggested things would likely change for the worse after things shake out, and she said something about the markets 'liking' repugs. I said something to the effect of 'that's not correct,' she disagreed, and I said we'd agree to not talk politics.

She's with a large financial services corporation which, coincidentally, manages my portfolio (my father used them for many years,) so I hope her apparent ignorance of the history of markets under repugs is not reflected in the advice she provides for my daughter. I just checked; she's in their Columbia office; used to be in NYC.

4. It surprised me too (living in southern HoCo)

But then the other day I saw my first "Ben Carson - 2016" sticker -- in PG County, on a car driven by an African-American woman.

7. I think that will be the exception, not the rule

However, Carson's faith and life story will have appeal, and we shouldn't ignore that.

I can only guess turnout, but I do know that affluent whites are upset about what they consider (and overstate, IMO) as the high crime in certain areas of Columbia.
