Editorial: Adams' finances don't pass smell test
An investigation by state election officials has concluded that state Rep. Paul Adams violated campaign finance law by accepting contributions from his parents and brother in excess of legal limits.
But rather than own up to that mistake, the Andover Republican has chosen to scuttle behind a smokescreen, suggesting that he has done nothing wrong and stating that the campaign finance law itself is "unnatural, and ultimately corrupting."
According to the report from the Massachusetts Office of Campaign and Political Finance, state officials after the election of November 2010 and an Eagle-Tribune story on the issue, received an anonymous complaint concerning the source of $50,000 Adams had loaned or contributed to his campaign committee.
OCPF found that Adams in 2010 had received checks from his parents, Steven and Lynette Adams, and his brother, Ammon Adams, totaling $39,000. Of that total, $33,000 came to Adams in late February or early March 2010, just weeks before he formed his campaign committee on March 22, 2010. A final $6,000 came from his parents in August 2010.
