Baker, Warren have large leads in new poll

By James Pindell GLOBE STAFF SEPTEMBER 19, 2018

In the first public poll of the general election in Massachusetts, Governor Charlie Baker, a Republican, had a 27-point lead over his Democratic challenger, Jay Gonzalez, who remains largely unknown to two-thirds of his party’s voters.

The survey also showed US Senator Elizabeth Warren, a Democrat, with an even larger gap over her Republican challenger, state Representative Geoff Diehl, 54 percent to 24 percent. Independent candidate Shiva Ayyadurai received 6 percent, and 16 percent said they were undecided.

The poll also asked likely voters about the high-profile ballot questions this fall.

On Question 1, an effort from the Massachusetts Nurses Association to increase staffing levels at hospitals, 52 percent said they supported the effort, while 33 percent did not and 15 percent were undecided.

On Question 3, which asks voters about the state’s transgender antidiscrimination law, 73 percent said they favored keeping the law as it is, while 17 percent said they wanted the law repealed, and 9 percent were undecided.
