Absentee ballot counting continues to cause delays in Flint election results

FLINT, MI -- The city of Flint delivered some of the last election results in Genesee County after the Aug. 6 primary election, and city and county officials say the delays were tied at least in part to an old problem -- processing absentee ballots.

Flint delivered its results to the county in three separate data drops in the early morning hours of Wednesday, Aug. 7, but it took until roughly 7 a.m. Wednesday to finish counting more than 5,000 absentee ballots, the latest of any area municipality, county Clerk-Register Domonique Clemons said.

Flint Clerk Davina Donahue told members of the City Council last week that the processing of absentee ballots was the primary issue that caused late results.

Council members said improvements need to happen before the Nov. 5 presidential election.
