June 05--LANSING -- The Safe Roads Yes campaign spent $9.3 million on the unsuccessful Proposal 1 campaign to increase the state sales tax to pay for roads -- or about $26 for each yes vote, according to a report filed Thursday and the committee's treasurer.
Of the amount raised for the campaign, about $5.5 million, or 59%, came from a lobby group representing road builders, the Michigan Infrastructure & Transportation Association, records filed with the Secretary of State show.
Proposal 1 was defeated on May 5, with 80% of those who went to the polls voting no.
The resounding defeat came despite the fact the Proposal 1 proponents massively outspent the no side in a campaign built mostly around TV ads. ..................(more)
