Fewer parents seek immunization waivers in Michigan

Fewer parents are seeking waivers from vaccinations required for their children to start school in the fall after the Labor Day weekend.

Oakland County health workers had expected a decline in waiver from the vaccines after a change in state rules that took effect in January 2015 required parents seeking waivers to meet with county health departments as a condition for receiving them.

“The overall result was that we had significantly less waivers as a result of changing that process,” said Kathleen Forzley, manager of the Oakland County Health Division.

Prior to the law change, Forzley speculated that people may have sought waivers if their children were behind on their vaccination schedules, just to get them into school.
