U.S. Reps. Justin Amash, Brenda Lawrence field questions at town halls

BATTLE CREEK — A rowdy and raucous crowd greeted U.S. Rep. Justin Amash in Battle Creek on Thursday, part of a wave of liberal activism that has descended on town hall meetings across the country in recent weeks.

“The level of partisanship is the highest I’ve ever seen. I think it’s great that people are involved and concerned,” Amash, a Cascade Township Republican, told the crowd of about 250 people. “But I look at Twitter and some of the comments you see online and the rhetoric has gotten way out of line. We have to find ways to work together and find ways to be respectful toward each other.”

Respect was on display as many constituents thanked Amash for holding town halls — the Battle Creek event was his third this year and he has another scheduled for Saturday — when many in Congress are ducking meetings with voters in their district.

But passions were also running high at the meeting with supporters of policies such as the Affordable Care Act loudly booing Amash when he said that the health care policy needs to be replaced.
