Mayoral candidate with felony charge eager for competition

LANSING -- Harold Leeman Jr., a former City Council president, confirmed Thursday he will run for mayor.

Part of the reason Leeman is running, he said, is to encourage others to join the mayoral race by the 4 p.m. April 25 filing deadline.

"I just feel this city, the public needs to have a choice," Leeman said. The city's primary is Aug. 8; the general election is Nov. 7.

Council Member Judi Brown Clarke and State Rep. Andy Schor are Leeman's competition -- for now.

Leeman faces a felony embezzlement charge in 54A District Court. He said the charge is related to volunteer work with a park concession stand. He has a preliminary exam on April 20.
