At least $36M in cuts to state worker issues proposed
LANSING – Lawmakers working to trim hundreds of millions of dollars from Gov. Rick Snyder's proposed 2018 budget would eliminate at least $36 million in proposed funding for issues that would directly affect state workers.
The state House would actually trim more than $40 million from Snyder's budget proposal on several items affecting civil servants, some 14,000 of whom live and work in Greater Lansing. Representatives would scale back Snyder's ask for additional Department of Natural Resources law enforcement personnel, halve his proposal for new acute-care staff at state psychiatric hospitals, and cut millions of dollars in new technology and equipment upgrades Snyder sought.
Senators would make many of the same cuts, but would invest more than the House in the Michigan State Police. Senators would actually train more troopers than Snyder asked for and, unlike the other chamber, would give Snyder all he asked for to replace outdated police radios and expand the agency's cyber crimes unit. State Sen. Mike Nofs, R-Battle Creek, who chairs the Senate's State Police spending committee, is a retired State Police commander.
The Senate would cut Snyder's recommendations for state worker issues by a net $36 million.
