Mackinac Island named the No. 1 summer destination in America

You already knew. Now everybody else knows.

The vacation planning website TripAdvisor just named Mackinac Island the No. 1 summer travel destination in America for 2018.

That's ahead of the likes of Martha's Vineyard (Mass.), Jackson Hole (Wyo.), Lake George (N.Y.) and Ocean City (Md.).

"This charming island is a throwback to old-timey seaside leisure with the candy-colored facades of downtown shops," TripAdvisor says. "Mackinac is world-famous for its homemade fudge and travelers can work off sugar highs by exploring the limestone bluffs of Mackinac Island State Park."

2. Was there 18 years ago.

Had lunch at The Grand Hotel. Went to the Fort there. Strolled the island and took in its early 19th century aura.

Not cheap then. Probably more expensive now.

Something odd here. That island couldn't begin to handle the volume that other destinations do. Disney World alone would swamp the place in a single day.

5. I spent every summer until I was about 19 "up North" and never went to Mackinac Island.

From the many I know that went and still go, no one raves about it as a "must do". I suppose if you are in the area already, you might as well check it out if you have a day. Just last year we had visitors up that just had to go, we booked ferry tickets for them, heard them drive off early in morning, and had dinner waiting for them upon their return. They enjoyed it, rented the bikes, ate some fish and some fudge, smelled the horses, etc., but it was not something they would need to do again.

7. It is a big tourist trap with overpriced hotel rooms,

little shops filled with "tchotchkes' made in china, and rude locals who have a love/hate relationship with visitors.

I was there several different times a while back when they were still riding the Christopher Reeves/Jane Seymour theme. After the last visit I thought if I never see this place again it will be too soon.

8. I've been there once.

in the early 90's and thought it was quaint and nice but I wouldn't go so far as to say it's the #1 vacation destination. I liked waking up to the clip clop of horses' hooves, liked biking around the island, the ferry ride over. It is definitely very touristy in season. We ate at the Grand Hotel. Yes, it was pricey but very nice (it was a special occasion dinner).

I wouldn't say that it's only for the 1%'ers. The grounds are beautiful but I was a little peeved that in order to walk the grounds of the Grand Hotel you either had to be staying there (very expensive) or pay $10 just to walk around.

9. I'm on SSDI and I found the place to be quite affordable

Some fudge shops allow you to sample their wide varieties of fudge. My wife and I stayed at a reasonably priced motel in St. Ignace and we rode the ferry to the island. Walked around town and then took a horse drawn carriage tour of the island. Didn't spend much as we didn't have much to spend in the first place but we had a great time and would like to go again soon.
