Abdul El-Sayed vows to take momentum from supporters into Whitmer's race in November

An emotional crowd of at least 1,000 supporters cheered for Abdul El-Sayed as the candidate expressed gratitude that they helped to create a movement from their belief in his Progressive platform that, he said, "reflected what America is supposed to be."

"I like to think that even though I'm not going to get the opportunity to serve, now we've ignited a belief of what's possible in young people ," El-Sayed said at Cobo Center in Detroit on Tuesday.

The candidate for the Democratic nomination for Michigan's governor spoke about two hours after the polls closed in the August 7 primary, generating cheers as he entered the room and some tears as supporters recognized the end of a hard-fought campaign that many hoped would be a closer contest.

...

But El-Sayed held onto the hopes of his supporters who, he said, responded to how he spoke about "working toward a more just, more equitable, a more sustainable Michigan."

They responded with enthusiasm as he told them: "That work does not end today."

Instead, the progressive candidate once called "the new Obama" urged them to retain their sense of becoming a progressive movement - and to unite behind Whitmer and deliver the Nov. 6 general election for her over the Republican nominee, Attorney General Bill Schuette.

"We have an opportunity," he said. "Do not walk out of here saying anything like, 'Abdul or bust.' Tomorrow, we turn around and we turn this into a movement to ... beat Bill Schuette in the fall."
