Michigan corrections officers and state government at contract negotiation standstill
LANSING Contract negotiations have stalled between the Michigan Corrections Organization and state government, union officials said Thursday, and a state board will be called in to settle the dispute.
The parties are deadlocked over security and staffing at state prisons two things that impact the safety of the roughly 6,000 corrections officers and forensic analysts who are MCO members, Executive Director Andy Potter said.
Were still hopeful that the Department of Corrections and the Office of State Employer can come up with some solutions for our officers to create a safer work environment and to create incentives that will recognize [them] and help keep them around," he said.
The stalemate between MCO and the Office of the State Employer will kick off impasse proceedings, starting with presentations to the Employment Relations Board starting Oct. 31. The board will then make a recommendation to the Civil Service Commission, which will determine the outcome of the impasse.
