Michigan schools have 24 hours to disclose coronavirus cases under new order

Michigan schools must notify the school community about probable and confirmed cases of COVID-19 within 24 hours under a new emergency public health order issued by Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Director Robert Gordon on Tuesday.

“Recent outbreaks throughout the country demonstrate that COVID-19 can spread quickly in the school setting,” Gordon said in a statement.

“Timely communication from schools to parents, guardians, students, teachers, staff and other persons affiliated with schools enables members of the school community to take measures to prevent spread of the virus.”

Under the order, local health departments have 24 hours to notify a school of of a school-associated case, whether it’s probable or confirmed. The school then has 24 hours to put that up as a public notice on their website and disclose which building the case is associated with. It goes into effect Oct. 12.
