Nessel, Consumers Energy reach 'historic' deal to end coal use in 3 years
A proposed settlement entered by Attorney General Dana Nessel and Consumers Energy would result in the state’s largest energy provider ending its use of coal 15 earlier than originally planned, Nessel’s office announced Wednesday.
The agreement still needs to be granted final approval by the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC), as it is part of Consumers Energy’s integrated resource planning case before the commission.
According to the company, which provides electricity to approximately 1.9 million Michiganders and natural gas to 1.8 million, it would be among the first utilities in the country to end its use of coal if the settlement is approved.
Consumers Energy’s current integrated resource plan was approved in June 2019 and provided for exploring the possibility of closing two of the company’s three remaining coal plants. The new plan, filed in June 2021, seeks the early closure of all remaining coal plants by 2025 — 15 years earlier than originally planned.
