To the small group with me at Sen Wellstones office Dec 2000

Do you think if we had gone a day earlier and sat face to face with the Senator, instead of his aides, he might have been the one who broke from the terrible bargain they were making with the Pubs? We made a very good argument, so good they kept bringing in more AIDES. We tried to save his life, we all just didn't know it yet.

During the joint session of Congress to certify the 2000 Election Results, many African American members of Congress raised objections about the fraud and misconduct involved in the electoral process in Florida. Needing the signature of just one senator to open up debate on the results of the election, no senator came forward:

"Not a single Senator came to the aid of the African Americans in Congress. One after another they were told to sit down and shut up." - Michael Moore narrating Fahrenheit 9/11.

"The objection is in writing and I don't CARE that it is not signed by a member of the Senate!" - Maxine Waters (D - CA), as seen in 'Fahrenheit 911,' elected in November 2002 to her seventh term in the House of Representatives.

Is when they want to blame Nader for the 2000 election. Any one of those Senators could have said no to this travesty. Not one stood up to speak out against the monkey business in 2004 either.

Speaking to Wellstone personally probably would have gotten you further though supposedly Gore had asked that no one sign on and Wellstone might have respected his wishes. But this was bigger than one man and what Gore's desire to not appear to be a bad loser (or whatever his motive was) was not as important as an honest outcome to that election and Paul may have listened hard enough to figure that out.
