Democratic party does not like to spend money on "non competitve" races

I've seen Sharon Sund at the Franken meeting several weeks ago.

There were two women running for the state house from Eden Prairie and other place, Chanhassen, I think. They were the "warming act." Sharon Sund, who is running for the third district just passed by and waved. I really wanted to talk to her but she was not here when we got to "mingle."

And now the strib reports the following:

As Democrats and Republicans pour resources into shoring up imperiled incumbents and aiding only the most promising challengers, long shots such as Sund are being forced to fend for themselves.

The shrinking map of competitive districts means that even though Paulsen has won three times in a district that twice supported President Obama, the Third Congressional District isn’t even a blip on the radar for either party.

On paper, Sund looks like a Democratic ideal: scientist, businesswoman, community organizer and mother of a child with disabilities, which led her to create a mentoring program. DFL state party chairman Ken Martin said of Sund, “She’s a very good candidate. But you need resources to get your message out there, and she’s behind the eight-ball right now.”

The campaign arms of House Democrats and Republicans have reserved about $75 million worth of TV advertising time across the country for fall campaigns... And so far, none of it is bound for Paulsen’s district or the Second Congressional District, where voters backed Obama and GOP Rep. John Kline, now seeking a seventh term against DFL challenger Mike Obermueller.

Instead, the $5.8 million in ad reservations in the Twin Cities area television market is aimed at voters in the Seventh and Eighth congressional districts, where longtime Democratic Rep. Collin Peterson is fending off a challenge from Republican Torrey Westrom, while Democratic Rep. Rick Nolan is coming up against an aggressive bid by Republican Stewart Mills.

However, just getting this candidates name out in social media will help her with donations and name identity. This works too.

Here are Torrey Westrom's Issues:

Fighting For agriculture

Torrey Westrom grew up working on his family dairy farm and has been a life-long advocate for agriculture, like fighting on behalf of policies such as the renewable energy or Fuel Standard.

It is only a small blip second from the bottom, not much background while Peterson is ranking Democratic on the Agriculture Committee. That is what matters in the 7th, Collin has had Tea-Party and Tea-Party-Like opponents (before the Tea Party was the cool Republican thing). His Blue Dog stances do turn off many DUers and DFLers but he keeps the seat.

I see most of the $5.8M going to the 8th, since we have already seen some Stewart Mills ads in the Twin Cities and Duluth markets.

I believe the 7th will go Republican (and stay there for many years), but only after Peterson retires, not by a direct challenger. Then I see Tea Party republican taking the seat which could make it more like the 6th than the 2nd.
