Mississippi School Board Appeals Order in Desegregation Case

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — A Mississippi school board has voted along racial lines to appeal a federal judge's order in a long-running desegregation case.

The Cleveland School District filed papers Monday asking the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to quickly review the order that requires campus consolidations.

Three white members of the local school board voted for the appeal, and two black members voted against it.

U.S. District Judge Debra Brown ruled May 13 that the district must combine East Side High, where all but one student is black, with Cleveland High, where 48 percent are white and 45 percent are black.

Why merge the schools instead of redraw the school district lines to increase diversity? When I think of merging schools I picture them taking the students from one school and packing them into the other school, which may not have large enough facilities to handle twice as many students.

but every time I hear Jackson, Mississippi, I can't help but think about the song "Uneasy Rider".

And I think Greg Iles is awesome, and a crusader, and I've stayed a campgrounds all through the state and never had a bad time. Actually, had one of the best times ever at Vicksburg.

If the schools aren't there, BUILD them. If they are there, FUND them.

Desegregation was probably one of the worst moves of the 20th century. Not that "separate but equal" crap but the "fund them all equally" crap would have worked better for the kids than busing.
