New Seat Belt Law in Mississippi Starts July 1st

A new law will soon go into effect in Mississippi requiring all back seat motor vehicle passengers to wear seat belts. As MPB's Mark Rigsby reports, the new law is aimed at saving lives.

Governor Phil Bryant recently signed into law Senate Bill 2724, making it mandatory to buckle up in the back seat. It's known as "Harlie's Law", named after 15 year old Harlie Oswalt, one of two teens killed in a car crash in Marshall County in November of last year. She was in the back seat, and not wearing a seat belt. Major David Cook is the Patrol Commander at the Marshall County Sheriff's Department.

"Harlie was very active in the school. Very active in the community. Real active young lady. Know her family real well. Good people. It's unfortunate this fine young lady lost her life for this to come up to become law."

Mississippi Highway Patrol Captain Johnny Poulos says the new law is a good one.

1. It's a good idea. The restt of the States should do the same. I know somebody is paying for ads on

TV to promote it too. The only part of the ad I remember is where Dad's sitting behind the wheel and the kids are in the back. Dad says he's going to wear his short shorts when he comes to pick them up. The kids all scream and Dad say, well buckle up and I won't.
