Mississippi domestic violence law reforms

Attorney General Jim Hood's office and others have worked with lawmakers in recent years to strengthen Mississippi's domestic violence laws.

Highlights of some of the changes, according to the AG's Domestic Violence Unit and key lawmakers:

2007: Creation of the Mississippi Domestic Abuse Protection Order Registry and the Domestic Violence Uniform Offense Reporting System. Mississippi courts are mandated to enter all domestic violence protection orders into the registry within 24 hours, and requires law enforcement to use the uniform report to document responses to calls.

2008: Laws expand the definition of "dating relationship" to also include former dating relationships.
