Former Meridian mayoral candidate found dead had bomb supplies in his house

A former mayoral candidate found shot to death in an apparent suicide Monday had bomb-making supplies, a stockpile of ammunition and a flame thrower in his home, officials said.

Mariner Durant, 23, whose body was found in the woods near a home on 14th Avenue in Meridian, appears to have committed suicide, officials said. But since he had reported feeling unsafe as the reason he had dropped out of the Meridian mayoral race, Meridian Police Chief Benny DuBose called in the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation to look into the death.

It was at that point, DuBose said, "some bomb-making materials and quite a bit of ammunition," were found, along with the flame thrower.

From the beginning, Lauderdale County Coroner Clayton Cobler said signs pointed to the gunshot having been self-inflicted. Durant's body was found Monday afternoon. His mother told police the last time she saw him was around 2 a.m., DuBose said, right around when Cobler estimates is the time of death.
