No, they're not crazy. But they did just buy a bankrupt hospital in rural Mississippi.

When the hospital in rural Panola County went into bankruptcy in August 2018, residents had good reason to worry.

Half of the state's rural hospitals were deemed at financial risk in a 2019 report. Others have shut down crucial services, such as closing an emergency room. Five rural hospitals have closed in Mississippi since 2013.

Why should the Panola Medical Center be any different?

This wasn't the first time the Batesville hospital had been in trouble. It's been through a medical fraud scandal, a 2009 bankruptcy and a string of owners.

While some in the community knew the hospital had a good cash flow, others did not, local officials say. Some residents feared the whole hospital could be shuttered.
