Before Trump's tax talk, Missouri Democrats seek to keep the conversation on health care

It was expected that the Missouri Democratic Party would put out a message ahead of President Donald Trump's speech about tax reform in Springfield on Wednesday.

But state party chairman Stephen Webber didn't take the tack of the left-leaning Center for American Progress, which blasted out a message to reporters that "Trump will rely on long-disproved voodoo economics" while offering "a big tax cut for corporations and the wealthy."

Instead, Webber and three Democratic state lawmakers held a press conference Tuesday afternoon outside Springfield's historic City Hall to talk about health care — not taxes — ahead of Trump's visit and the commotion accompanying a presidential presence.

"The president's job is not to tweet. The president's job is not to entertain," Webber said. "The job of the president is to look out for the most vulnerable. And we're here to be as clear as we can: Trump needs to honor his promises, he needs to stop breaking his promises, and the Republicans need to stop cutting our health care."
