St. Louis-area pastors call for an end to speed cameras

FLORISSANT, Mo. (KMOV) – St. Louis-area pastors spoke in Florissant on Tuesday to take a stand against cities that use speed cameras.
The group says there is no evidence to show the cameras make drivers safer or data showing the cameras cut down on crashes.
Instead, they say the cameras are nothing more than a way for cities to make money.
At a press conference Tuesday, pastors said the travesty was that the cameras were placed mostly in poorer areas in St. Louis County and affect residents who can least afford the tickets or contest them.
The ministers sent a letter to the county council to put the cameras up to a vote.

however, if you are of limited income and have to pay a fine, there would certainly be less for the collection plate if that is the direction of your train of thought.

I believe that they were pointing out the fundamental unfairness in the placement of speed cameras and that they are mainly used to generate income for the municipalities as opposed to actually increasing safety.

And my train of thought wasn't less for the collection plate. My train of thought was a bunch of preachers were talking, maybe they have a monthly meeting over some interchurch project going on, and in the course of the conversation, they found out that they had all (or nearly all) been busted by the cameras.

I've heard stories when I was living in Tulsa for so long that in the 1940s and 1950s, parents in Oral Roberts' neighborhood would make sure that their kids weren't playing in or close to the street at certain times of the day because that's when Oral would come barreling through because he loved driving fast. So I was projecting that onto the preachers. Maybe they like to drive fast as well, and they don't like being busted for it.

that you are correct. Could be that they are trying to look out for their church memberships. Hard to know what is in someone's mind.
