Tax to fund resort-area infrastructure moves forward in House
In a hearing before the House Taxation Committee on Thursday, Gallatin County leaders were among those who requested that lawmakers help them address their infrastructure needs.
Senate Bill 241, which the committee passed 17-1, would allow Montana’s 10 resort areas — two of which are in Gallatin County — to ask voters whether to increase their local sales tax from 3 percent to 4 percent, with the additional 1 percent funding infrastructure projects.
The ballot question for the tax increase would have to specify the projects for which the funds would be used and the tax increase would expire when the projects were completed.
The bill passed the Senate 33-16 in March. With the approval of the House Taxation Committee, the bill will now go to the House floor.
