After Gilroy shooting, California lawmakers seek gun safety summit with Nevada legislators
California state lawmakers are calling for a gun safety summit with their Nevada counterparts in the wake of last month’s deadly mass shooting that left three dead and 13 wounded at the Gilroy Garlic Festival.
California politicians and media outlets were quick to point out the 19-year-old gunman couldn’t have legally bought the assault weapon used in the shooting in his home state. Instead, Santino William Legan went next door to Nevada, one of three states bordering California where residents over the age of 18 can purchase a rifle.
Now, a group of more than two dozen Golden State legislators led by Assemblyman Jesse Gabriel, D-San Fernando Valley, hope their eastern neighbors will help them hash out new ways to thwart future shooters.
A Monday letter penned by the group and addressed to Nevada’s legislative leaders says the Gilroy shooting underscores the need for California to “work closely with neighboring states to close loopholes and advance common sense gun safety measures.”
